Public Investigations

Home

Due to the groups involvement in filming the BBC series 'Northern Ireland's Greatest Haunts', we have not been able to focus a great deal of time on some of the public cases below, however PSI will be returning to some of these locations and some new ones throughout 2010. With an already busy 2010 planned, we have also agreed to return to all of the locations used during the filming of the series.

To date we have carried many investigations, from private houses to public locations/buildings all over the UK and Ireland. We offer a complete service, from the initial interview to baseline tests of the location then on to carry out full concise paranormal investigations. Each location is different, some requiring more investigation than others. The team gather evidence, and dependant on the request of the property owner, appropriate measures will be taken to resolve the situation..

A large part of our work is done behind the scenes at private investigations, where we dedicate our time in helping individuals and families in understanding and dealing with various phenomena. Quite often we are able to provide a very logical and normal explanation for what has previously been a cause of distress. Below are a few recent examples of just how important and appreciated our work can be.

Thankyou letter from the HIV Support Centre

We also have an interest in & investigate all aspects of the unknown, from crop circles to UFOs & other unexplained phenomena.

New & Ongoing Investigations

Hell-fire Club - Montpelier Hill, Dublin, IE

What now remains of the old hunting lodge in the Dublin mountains dates back to 1725, and was apparently built as an occasional summer retreat by Rt. Hon. William Conolly of Castletown, Speaker of the Irish House of Commons. It has since been steeped in folklore and claims of Occult activity and satanic ritual.

There have been a number of reports of paranormal experiences over the years. PSI paid a visit to the Hellfire Club on 16th August 09 along with members of Hidden Dublin Tours who will be holding a tour of the building and surrounding area on 31st October, Halloween night. You can see a short video of the team on location, here.

Further details and findings to be posted here in due course.

Whitecross Cottage - Newry, Co. Down

After initially visiting the location a number of years ago the group returned to Whitecross in April 2009. There have been reports of the family who once lived there leaving in the mid 1980s due to the level of activity in the house. Whilst it is evident that a family had left in a hurry the team have yet to experience anything out of the ordinary at the property. It is our belief, certainly today that there is no evidence of any activity at this location.

Disused Farmhouse - Co. Tyrone

After initial investigations by our North-West team we have recently joined them in visiting this old, disused farmhouse in Co. Tyrone, accompanied by Marion Goodfellow from 'NI's Greatest Haunts'. Here there have been reports of people being touched and objects regularly being thrown across the room. Whilst on several investigations, all members of the team have witnessed stones seemingly being thrown across the room, with no immediately apparent explanation. It is our intention to focus more on this location, running several experiments with the aim of uncovering the reason behind the yet unexplained stone throwing.

Armagh Gaol - Armagh City, Co. Armagh

Constructed in the 18th century, the gaol was originally three prisons – one for women, one for debtors and one for felons. Executions were common at the gaol. The last man to be executed at Armagh gaol was Joseph Fee in 1904, and it was finally closed in 1986. Used during the Northern Ireland's Greatest Haunts series, PSI have made one of was hoped to be many return investigations. However, unfortunately due to the ongoing construction work, it is unlikely we will be able to return to this location.

Woburn House - Millisle, Co. Down

Built in 1863, Woburn House has had varied uses. Once the home of the Dunbar family, it has since been a borstal and is now used as a training college for the Prison Service of Northern Ireland. PSI spent time here during the filming of Greatest Haunts, and have been asked to return here to carry out further investigations.

Galgorm Castle - Galgorm, Co. Antrim

Located in Galgorm just outside Ballymena, this building is steeped in history. Again, having been used as a location during the TV series. We paid a recent visit to Galgorm in May 2009. Without the pressure of filming for the TV series, it gave us an opportunity to focus on EVP work. Having set up microphones in the middle stairway and attic, we captured what seem to be a number of disembodied voices. These will be added to the Gallery section shortly.

Limavady Workhouse - Limavady, Co. Londonderry

Opened in 1842, closing in 1932 this building became the last resort for paupers in the area, where they would live on a very basic diet, and often experience brutal treatment at the hands of the workhouse masters. Having been used as a location during the TV series, we will be returning here in the near future.

Shamrock Club - North Belfast, Co. Antrim

After the initial investigation carried out by the team late 2008 and having recorded a number of inexplicable EVPs in the main hall, we returned in May 2009 with audio/visual and

Crumlin Road Jail - Belfast, Co. Antrim

After an investigation carried out by the team here a number of years back, the group returned to carry out a public charity investigation of the prison in late Feb 09 with a nervous group of first time investigators joining us to help raise money for the HIV support centre. The event was a huge success and enjoyed by all.. The jail is steeped in history, with quite a number of executions carried out and is reported to be a very active location.

Crawfordsburn Apparition - Crawfordsburn Country Park, Co. Down

Some time ago, we were approached by Christina Garvin of Belfast with a video of a family day out which allegedly shows a full apparition. The footage taken in Crawfordsburn Country Park back in 2002 shows what would first appear to be the outline of a human form moving from right to left across the screen. We will be submitting to a number of experts around the world in a bid to come up with a logical explanation and we will let you know when we are closer to a conclusion on this. The footage can be seen here in the gallery. We would gladly welcome your opinion and any theories on what may have caused the image to appear.

Richhill Castle - Richhill, Co. Armagh

During a number of recent investigations to Richhill Castle, PSI have been witness to a number of interesting events. One of these being a 'growl like' noise caught on the top floor. After a number of unsuccessful attempts to recreate this EVP, the team have yet to come to a conclusion on its origin. In another example, some video footage of a light anomaly was captured in the same room. The light which appeared as a small sphere, rotated around the table where a number of team members were sitting. This footage can be seen here in the gallery.

After reviewing footage from a recent investigation at Richhill, a light can be seen switching on and off in the downstairs hallway. None of the team members were near any light switches at the time this occurred. A clip of this can be seen here.

Ross Castle - Co. Meath, IE

The atmosphere typical of that of an old Irish castle. Nothing much experienced during the night, other than during a vigil in the bedroom on the top floor.  Not long after entering the room, it quickly became apparent that there was a noise coming from the roof above us.  This sounded like a heavy ball/object being rolled or dragged across the surface of the roof, however after some time it became clear that this seemed to follow a pattern with gusts of wind blowing outside. When discussed with the owners the following day, they advised that they had been on the roof a matter of days before and nothing was found.  The source of this sound still remains a mystery. After coming together for a debrief the team head to bed, get to sleep quickly and have an undisturbed evening.

Overall, not much to report from this stay at Ross, a fairly quiet evening and not a lot of activity.

Unexplained Lights - Bangor, Co. Down

On the evening of Saturday 12th, May 2007 many reports were made by members of the public to the local authorities and press of strange orange coloured lights over the skies of Bangor. One of these individuals was ex. NIPS member Mike Hirons, who appeared on BBC Newsline discussing his sighting.

PSI are currently liaising with a Dublin based UFOlogy team to aid the investigation of the sightings and have conducted a series of experiments, of which one is shown on the gallery of a chinese lantern. Whilst the image was quite similar in nature, the behaviour and movement pattern was not, in comparison with eye witness accounts.

Ballyboley Forest - Larne, Co. Antrim

Local legend suggests that this was an ancient Druid site, and that several people have gone missing in the area over the last few centuries. A number of sightings of strange phenomena have been reported over the years, including dark shadows or mists and shrieks coming from amongst the trees.

During the group's initial investigation here in early May 07, some interesting but inconclusive photos had been taken in various areas of the forest. These can be seen in the gallery.

During the team's second visit to Ballyboley in August 07, with many expectations after what has been reported to the press in the past, the team were left disappointed after an uneventful evening.

Other current investigations...

PSI are currently carrying out a number of other investigations, of which we cannot presently release details. One of which is a private shop in North Belfast , where we will be returning to for a full investigation shortly.
