Equipment We Use

Home

An important part of the group's research is trialling new scientific equipment; this is a very important part of the investigational process. Part of the investigation relies on what we capture on film or on digital voice recorders, as this is often more compelling to the outside world if indeed anything is captured. However, using environmental equipment whilst not providing tangible evidence of the paranormal, it does help us to understand the effects of the environment and electrical equipment during an investigation, often ruling more out than in. We are constantly striving to develop with new equipment and have just recently added some new equipment to our collection, saving time walking around with handheld devices and notepads which would otherwise take our attention from other important projects. We have also recently acquired new software used when working with voice recordings (EVP) to enable us to clean up and reduce background noise.

We at PSI are making great leaps forward in this field and are moving away from some of the old equipment still used by some paranormal investigators today. Some still believe that an EMF meter can be used as a ghost detector but looking closer, no such device exists. There is no such thing as a ghost detector and in fact many groups today still use an EMF meter without understanding its use or what the readings mean.

8 Camera CCTV System
The team have just purchased a BTR-3104/25 OCD 8 channel CCTV system. This includes a Prestigio 17'' TFT monitor, and IR cameras to enable us to film every area within the location we are investigating. This will be monitored along with other stats at the group's base station, ensuring we capture any events, paranormal or other as they happen. The system also has a built in DVD burner, which will save time in that it will allow us to make an instant copy of any footage we feel needs to be focussed on and more in depth analysis can then be carried out at another location. The system can be set up to record on all cameras continuously for 3 or 4 days.

Condenser Microphone System
Another essential piece of kit PSI has recently purchased is a set of highly sensitive condenser microphones with mixing desk. This will complement the CCTV system, allowing us to enjoy full audio/visual monitoring capabilities throughout the location being investigated. The live feeds are input to a PC running Adobe Audition, enabling our Audio/Visual team to closely monitor each area. Any EVP samples can then be analysed from the produced recordings.

Thermal Imager - Raytek Thermoview Ti30
Displays electronic images from emissions of heat (invisible beams of "thermal radiation"). Unlike thermometers, which require direct physical contact, thermal-imaging devices can "see" and precisely measure differences in heat from a distance capturing the upper portion of the infrared light spectrum. It is believed by many that spirits manifesting have a temperature in their form that stands out in this spectrum, especially if a spirit is present in a cold location. This device is available to the group when required for investigation.

TriField EM Meter
The Trifield Meter combines all the features needed for fast, accurate measurement of EMF pollution. This is the only meter that combines measurement capability of electric, magnetic, radio and microwave frequencies.

It independently measures electric and magnetic fields.

Infra Red night Vision Equipment
The group have now acquired 10 hard disc video cameras, which avoid the need for swapping DVDs, and make it easier to analyse and store footage. We also now have an infrared enabled camera for taking high resolution still images. For use in illuminating live night time vision, captures & records phenomena that cannot normally be seen with the naked eye.

Laptop PC
An invaluable piece of equipment with an array of uses within the group, including analysis of data transferred from monitoring equipment, audio/video editing, group presentations etc.

Mixing Desk and Sennheiser Headphones
Used in conjunction with the condenser microphone setup and laptop to monitor a location, and particularily during EVP sessions, this allows us to ensure we hear and capture every minute sound, for later analysis.

Carbon Monoxide Detector
It has been reported that even in cases of low CO concentration that this can cause individuals to have feelings often associated with a paranormal experience, including in rare cases, hallucination. This device will measure carbon monoxide in parts per million, allowing us to rule out the contribution of CO on investigation.

High Resolution Digital Cameras
For use in capturing light anomalies, unexplained shapes, shadows & objects, recommended to use only the highest resolution, above at least 3 million pixels to capture & record as evidence.

Ultra Violet Torch & UV Strip Lamp
Enhances night time vision to the naked eye, also to show up anomalies & figures, shapes that would not usually be picked up by night vision equipment.

Digital Voice Recorders
Most paranormal phenomena is sound related, so it is important to be able to make high quality recordings of these inexplicable sounds, known as EVP or Electronic Voice Phenomena.

Electromagnetic Field Meters
Electromagnetic field meters (EMF) are used to detect fluctuations of electric & magnetic fields. Electrical fields are given off by everyday electrical appliances which have a range of 50 to 60 hertz. Geomagnetic fluctuations are very different readings altogether. Most paranormal groups use a standard single-axis AC EMF which are basically useless to investigators as they are not sensitive enough to be able to detect natural sources. As research has shown, exposure to high readings of Electromagnetism can give the impression or the sense of not being alone, hearing voices & being touched. This is not a ghost detector as many would believe, no such equipment exists.

Geiger Counter
Varying levels of Ionising radiation has been detected in some locations where paranormal activity has been reported. Ionising radiation is a cause of increased concentrations of positively charged air ions.

Air Ion Counter
Large concentrations of air ions of both positive and negative charge have been at some locations where paranormal activity has been reported. Charged Ions have also been linked to unusual lights and glows at haunted locations.

Temperature & Humidity Logger
A simple and accurate way to monitor and record temperature and humidity changes, the results of which can then be displayed graphically on the group laptop. It is believed that temperature & humidity fluctuations are frequently reported before & during paranormal activity.

Environment Meter
A multi-function device combining the functions of a sound meter, light meter, humidity meter & thermometer into one instrument.

Audio Editing PC Software
This is used to record, analyse and edit EVP recordings from digital voice equipment and the condenser microphone system.

Two Way Radio Communication
Communication is very important when several groups are involved in a vigil. You may need to liaise with the other groups during the course of the investigation. This is also a must for Safety reasons.

1TB External Hard Drive
This is used to create a backup of all group documents and media. It also creates a central point for all investigation material to be collated, so that this can be referred to in the case of future visits.
